Today we will look into the Touch Me Not plant with botanical name Mimosa Pudica plant. How to grow and care this touch me not plant in your home garden.
Mimosa Pudica is known by various names like Touch Me Not plant, Shy Plant, sensitive plant, sleepy plant, Dormilones, humble plant, shame plant, Lajja plant, etc. It is a herbal plant from the pea family.
The characteristic feature of this plant is its leaves which fold or shrink inwards on touch something like a defence mechanism like defending themselves from some harm and then they reopen after few minutes. Also the foliage close in dark and then reopen in light.
They also produce flowers which are pale pink or purple in color.
Another feature of the roots of this plant is they produce carbon disulfide which is antifungal and protects the plants .
The mechanism of this leaf closure on touch or at night is known as seismonastic movement or nyctinastic movement which is caused due to an action potential generated in the plant on touch which causes the movement of potassium ions to flow out of the cells and loose their turgor and collapse. This infact is expensive for the plant because its spends lot of energy on this and this also interferes with photosysnthesis by the plant because the leaves are closed.
As claimed by Ayurveda, the touch me not plant is used mainly in the treatment of wounds, piles, uterine prolapse and diarrhea.

Its propagated most often by seeds.
The Soil Requirement of this plant is unique, because it grows most effectively in nutrient poor well draining soil. That’s strange and it hardly competes with other plants for nutrients. Hence it can be safely grown close to any other plants.
Then, it’s also a shade loving plant and commonly grows under trees or besides some other plants. SO if you want to grow touch me not, take care of these two factors. That’s it.
