When the clock struck midnight, marking the final moments of 1943, and the New Year of 1944 began, World War II continued at a rapidly accelerating pace. All eyes turned to London as the preparations for Operation Overlord, the long-awaited Allied Invasion of Northern France, were finalized.

In Germany Adolf Hitler and his high-ranking officials knew all too well that the invasion forces would soon be on their way, but where they would land, and perhaps more importantly, when they would cross the Channel, was yet to be revealed.

Hitler’s public appearances were now very rare, and the Fuhrer struggled to come to terms with the reality of the German situation. On all sides his position was becoming daily more untenable, with the Allies making good progress in both the European and Pacific Theatres of War.

With his henchmen all around him, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler and Herman Goering to name but a few, Hitler grew increasingly withdrawn and was often irrational in his decision making.
