When the first bombs fell on Baghdad in February 1991, the war resembled a gigantic video game: futuristic-looking images, broadcast to millions of households by CNN, organized for the Pentagon by a PR agency. Viewers could only guess at the fatal consequences of the attacks on the population. The US had learned from its defeat in Vietnam. All depictions of the 1991 Iraq War were staged or censored. Only select journalists were permitted to report on them. The US government received much criticism for this limited coverage.
