Hert so Hy: Songs of Longing from Medieval Europe - Katherine Christie Evans

Ensemble: Katherine Christie Evans Album: Hert so Hy: Songs of Longing from Medieval Europe Video: women playing gitterns from various manuscripts from XII to XIV centuries http://www.facebook.com/musicamedievale • '1 woman, 1 gittern 1 microphone! A collection of medieval European love songs, arranged for gittern and voice, performed and recorded by Katherine Christie Evans' Here is the brief introduction that Katherine Christie Evans gives of her album 'Hert so Hy: Songs of Longing from Medieval Europe' on her Bandcamp, but a few more words on this splendid work must necessarily be added. As those who follow the channel already know, I love minimal arrangements and shun excessive orchestrations when performing a medieval repertoire and this album has definitely made its way into my heart: it is proof that a voice and a musical instrument are really enough (in addition to the talent, obviously) to be able to excite more than an entire orchestra would. The mini-album is a compendium of some of the most beautiful European compositions of the 13th-14th centuries. 'Adiu, Adiu, Dous Dame Jolie' by the Italian Francesco Landini opens, a piece which is followed by the famous 'Voulez-vous que je vous chant?', which is probably one of the most beautiful trouvère melodies that have come down to us. 'I Have Set my Hert so Hy' a song that takes us to England, Evans' homeland, and whose melody resonates sweet and melancholy, like most of the secular music that has come down to us from that territory, think also of 'Bryd one Brere', another beautifully performed composition on this album. Between the two English songs you will find 'Lucente stella', an anonymous Italian song preserved in the famous Codex Rossi. The work concludes with two pieces from France, composed by the trouvère Guillaume de Machaut and they are 'Puis Qu'en Oubli' and 'Je Vivroie Liement' which Katherine performs with a truly compelling rhythm and which breaks the performance standards (finally!) in which stringed instruments are often confined. The mini-album is wonderful and has only one problem: the length! It's really short and only a few verses of the songs are performed and this is a huge disappointment because it should have lasted hours. Who knows, there may come a day when Katherine Christie Evans decides to take up the work again and make a longer version of it! For now, enjoy 'Hert so Hy: Songs of Longing from Medieval Europe' and don't forget to purchase the work from Bandcamp. The proceeds will go directly to the artist. Regarding the video: I used several thumbnails from several manuscripts. The search was long, but very interesting and had the aim of finding only images of women playing the gittern. I wish you happy listening!
