When water and magma or lava mix, a very violent explosion is instantaneously produced due to water instantly flashing to steam. Some of the world's largest volcanic eruptions have been as a result of water suddenly flooding into a giant volcanic magma chamber before or during an active eruption, creating an explosion that is several magnitudes higher than what would've otherwise had occurred if the volcanic eruptions were strictly magmatic in their eruptive styles. The mixing of water and magma has been the catalyst for some of the largest supervolcanic eruptions that have occurred on our planet for these reasons precisely. Lake Taupo, Lake Toba, Campi Flegrei and Yellowstone are just a few examples of the types of super volcanoes that have undergone this type of eruptive style.

Water and magma interact to produce two different classes of volcanic eruptions. That being Phreatic, and Phreatomagmatic eruptions. The difference between the two lies in how the magma and water interact and whether the two directly or indirectly contact each other.

There are three different types of Phreatomagmatic eruptive styles and we will cover them, and explain the difference between Phreatic and Phreatomagmatic eruptions in this video.

On top of that, we will also take a look at what happens when the three volcanic eruption classes mix - such as when phreatic or phreatomagmatic events occur during a magmatic eruption.
