Anatoly Moskvin, a Russian academic and cemetery historian, was discovered in 2011 to have exhumed and preserved the remains of 29 young girls, which he kept in his home disguised as life-sized dolls. A highly intelligent and reclusive man, Moskvin had a deep interest in death, folklore, and the occult, shaped by early-life trauma and unusual experiences. Despite his professional success, his personal life was marked by isolation and an unfulfilled desire for family. He claimed to have acted out of compassion, believing he was caring for the deceased, though his actions deeply shocked the public and devastated the victims’ families. Found to have a mental illness, Moskvin was declared unfit for trial and committed to psychiatric care, where he remains under supervision.
