Asuka II is the largest cruise ship registered in Japan, and debuted on March 17, 2006. The ship's port of registration is Yokohama Port, and it is owned and operated by NYK Cruises, an affiliate of NYK.

The first Asuka was launched in October 1991, but it was so popular during the high season that passengers who wanted to board the ship were becoming increasingly dissatisfied, saying they could not make a reservation. The operators felt that this was a missed business opportunity, so they decided to replace the ship with the Crystal Harmony, operated by Crystal Cruises, another member of the Nippon Yusen Group, which was refurbished for Japan and renamed the Asuka II, and the Asuka was sold.

飛鳥IIは2006年3月17日にデビューした日本籍では最大のクルーズ船です。船籍港は横浜港であり、日本郵船の関係会社である郵船クルーズが所有・運航しています。

初代・飛鳥は1991年10月に就航しましたが、ハイシーズンにおいては大人気で「予約が取れない」と乗船希望客の不満が募るようになっていました。運営する側としてもこれはビジネスチャンスを逃していることに他ならず、同じ日本郵船グループのクリスタルクルーズ社が運航する「クリスタル・ハーモニー」を日本向けに改装し「飛鳥II」として代替投入、これに伴い「飛鳥」は売船されることとなりました。
