Do you know why pirates wore eye patches?
Let me tell you right now it’s not because they were missing an eye or had eye issues. (Takes off patch)
It’s actually for tactical reasons. The human eye takes about 25 minutes to adjust to darkness.
The retina which is located in the back of your eye has to generate a compound which takes some time.
Pirates wore eyepatches because if they wanted to go under the deck during day time, they would just
switch the eye patch from one eye to the other. This way they always have one eye ready for darkness and one eye ready for the light.
In the federal aviation administration’s handbook they actually specifically tell the pilots that they should close one eye when looking at any light-source during nighttime so that they don’t lose their night vision.
And I suggest the same thing for you, if you’re driving at night-time make sure you don’t lose your night vision by looking at any light source, so even more reason why you shouldn’t be looking at your phone while driving.
