Nobel Prize-winning physicist David Gross has given a powerful reality check to India — he says, before we focus on “Make in India”, we must build a strong foundation of “Discover in India”. Without investing in research and innovation, India can’t become a true global leader in technology and science.

Gross pointed out that India’s R&D spending is very low (just 0.64% of GDP), and if we don’t focus on original discoveries, we will always be dependent on other countries' inventions. He praised India’s talent but urged policymakers to prioritize basic research and long-term scientific development.

This is a wake-up call for all of us. Manufacturing is important, but creating original ideas and technology is what will make India truly Atmanirbhar.
