This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Acura TLX and Lexus IS. Both of these compact premium sedans have been updated for 2021. The Acura TLX comes with a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 10 speed automatic transmission producing 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The Type S is coming this spring and will have a 3L turbocharged V6 engine with 355 horsepower & 354 lb-ft of torque. The TLX is priced between $43,990 CAD / $37,500 USD to $51,690 CAD / $46,300 USD depending on trim levels. The Lexus IS comes with 3 engines but, the most popular is the
IS 300 AWD: 3.5L V6 with a 6 speed automatic transmission, 260 horsepower, 236 lb-ft of torque.The Lexus IS 300 AWD starts at $43,400 CAD / $41,000 USD. Keep in mind; Canada and the US have different trim offerings, which reflects the pricing. When it comes to standard features, the TLX gets a power moon roof, a 10.25” infotainment screen, heated front seats, 18” wheels, Apple Carplay & Android Auto. The IS 300 AWD also comes with these features, but gets an 8” infotainment screen and no moon roof as standard. You have to move up to the next trim to get the moon roof and if want the bigger 10.3” infotainment screen, you’ll have to go up a few trims. It is great Acura is giving buyers the larger screen and moon roof as standard. The Lexus IS basically got a refresh, the engines are the same and the interior is similar with the exception of a new 10.3” screen; it’s clean, comfortable and familiar. The TLX on the other hand is all new, new platform, new engine and modern styling to the exterior and interior. I certainly enjoy driving both of them. The Lexus is comfortable and smooth, but the TLX feels a little more dynamic & fun. With the Type S arriving in the spring with more power, it’s definitely going to give the IS a run for its money.When it comes to fuel economy, the Acura TLX is the winner, but not by much.
