Learn about the Sun! Part 2/2

Do you know what creates the northern lights? Also known as the aurora borealis? Also did you know that in 1859 all of the telegraph machines suddenly started to shock their operators and sparking electricity? The Sun is responsible for all of these. In a previous episode I explained what solar winds and flare are. Normally when our planet is faced with these energized particles, earth’s magnetic field protects us from them. It redirects the particles towards the poles. These energized particles hit the Nitrogen and Oxygen in our atmosphere and when electrons in atoms are excited, they want to go back to their normal state and they do that by releasing a colorful light. For oxygen it’s mostly green and for nitrogen mostly red. And this is basically what causes the polar lights. But sometimes these solar storms are too strong for earth’s magnetic field to handle, and in 1859 that happened, the storm was so strong that it lit up some areas so much that people started making breakfast because they thought it was morning. If a storm like that happens right now, it could cause major damage to our power stations and satellites. The chances of something like this happening are actually 12% every 10 years? Like and follow to learn about random stuff sometimes.
