Paul Harold Westerberg (born December 31, 1959) is an American musician, best known as the vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter of the band The Replacements.
The Replacements frontman had a barbaric bark that could match any muscular hardcore psychopath, but his ability to bring wit, disdain, irony, and intimacy to the chaos made him the greatest Midwestern rock singer of the 1980s. ("Rolling Stone")
After the breakup of The Replacements, he began a solo career, releasing three albums on major labels, and later independently recording music in his own studio.
He worked under the pseudonym Grandpaboy and released several albums and EPs.
He was involved in film music (Singles, Open Season) and participated in songwriting with Joan Jett.
In 2015, he formed the band The I Don't Cares with Juliana Hatfield.
He suffered a hand injury that affected his guitar playing.
He struggled with alcohol addiction, which he overcame in 1990.
He has a star on the wall of fame at the First Avenue club in Minneapolis.
In 2023, Rolling Stone included him in its list of the 200 greatest vocalists of all time.
