Filmmaking often requires adjusting colors on set to achieve the right look in the final product. The carpet in Severance is a great example—it appears as a muted teal in the show, but on set, it was actually an intense green. This was a deliberate choice to compensate for the planned color grade, which reduced green tones in skin. Since that process also affects other greens in the environment, the production team exaggerated the carpet color to ensure it looked right in the final image.
This technique has been used throughout film history. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s ruby slippers were actually dark burgundy because Technicolor processing would have made true red look overly bright. Similarly, filmmakers adjust speeds, lighting, and even material textures to ensure they look correct on screen.
