Window frames (nalichniki in Russian) are a big part of Russian culture. Since the 17th century, windows were decorated with hand carved ornaments to protect the owners from evil spirits or to show off their wealth. Nobody really knows exactly how this beautiful tradition had started.

But I know for a fact - Russia is losing this huge part of their culture. Wooden houses are being demolished daily. And you hardly ever see a new house being built with such wooden ornaments. I guess it is just too expensive or we just lost the craftsmanship.

In December, I was contacted by a girl who wanted such window frame for a mirror in her house. I couldn’t resist. I had never worked on such frames before. And I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

It took me 2 months to bring this frame back to life. And I would definitely do it again. I am happy that people are beginning to understand the importance of preserving these window frames in any way they can.
I see more and more interior designs with restored window frames. And I have a feeling that this is just the beginning.

Restoration:
Disassembly, removal of all old nails, removal of old paint, wood damage repair, proper assembly, 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, installation of a mirror.
