SNAKE PLANT: Sansevieria Care Tips and Propagation by leaf cuttings / Rhizome

We will learn on the How to care Sansevieria plant or Snake Plant and finally show you How to propagate Sansevieria from leaf cuttings and also Rhizome Divisions. That’s coming up… Sansevieria is a succulent plant with about 70 species and sometimes included in the Dracaena family according to wikipedia. Common names of sanseveria include mother-in-law's tongue, devil's tongue, jinn's tongue, bow string hemp, snake plant and snake tongue. This is perhaps because of its shape like a long tongue or snake like long leaves and might also be because it’s a poisonous plant like mother in laws tongue. Sansevieria trifasciata and its variant 'Laurentii' is the commonly grown ornamental plant in home gardens and indoors. This is a NASA recommended air purifying plant and purifies air by removing some toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, and others and one more thing to remember is its leaves are poisonous on oral ingestion. So keep it away from your kids. Now will look into Care Tips for Sansaveria plant and then Propagation of sansevieria plant: Sansevierias thrive with minimal care and live for many years, and they are almost indestructible and drought tolerant plants. 1. Sunlight: They need moderately bright and indirect sunlight. They can tolerate low light, but for best results indoors keep it near a window. 2. Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely before watering, and then water deeply until water drips through the drainage hole. Its roughly once or twice a week depending on your zone and season. 3. Temperature: They tolerate wide range of temperatures from 15 to 45 degree centigrade, but die below 10 degrees. 4. Fertilizer: Watch video. 5. Repotting: This is usually done only when the roots are bound or when you see the roots coming out of the drainage holes. Now Will look into Propagation of Snake Plant: Sansevieria can be propagated by seeds, leaf cutting, and division of the root ball and rhizome. Seeds are rarely used because they are slow to grow plants and can be grown faster from cuttings and rhizome divisions. 1. If you want the exact replica of the plant without variations, rhizome division is the best method to multiply snake plants. It happens by nature and it gives rise to small pups from the base. You can separate these and grow as independent plants. 2. You can also grow Sansevieria from Leaf Cuttings. It’s not as easy to do this, but one hack or tip here in this method, can make you successful. THREE THINGS YOUR SHOULD CAREFULLY DO HERE ARE: 3. First make sure your knife or cutting tool is very clean and sharp, you can use spirit or hydrogen peroxide or even an antiseptic like Dettol from your home first aid kit to wipe the cutting tool. 4. Then secondly Make multiple pieces of about 1 to 2 inches and make sure you note the direction of the leaf upwards by making a mark on the cuttings, otherwise your cuttings will fail to root. 5. Thirdly important tip here is... 6. But this may not give 100 percent results, but actually its fun to do this. Do try this and let me know your results in the comments section below this video.
