In this video, we explore the rich history and intricate geological processes that led to the formation of the Gympie Goldfields, one of Australia's most renowned gold mining regions. One of Queensland's largest gold nuggets was discovered in the rivers here during the days of alluvial mining. When the alluvial waterways were depleted of gold, the hunt for gold rich quartz lodes began and hard rock mining made up the second half of the gold rush here.

In this video we not only look at the gold rush that occurred in Gympie, but also the geological processes that formed the region and deposited the gold. Discover how Gympie went from an ancient volcanic arc that was originally separated from Australia and lay in the ancient paleo-pacific ocean, to its eventual accretion onto the continental landmass following a subduction event known as the Hunter-Bowen Orogeny.
