Russia Wagner Group Just Won The Hearts Of Africans As They Did This In Central African Republic
The activities of Russian private military company, Wagner Group, in the Central African Republic? In a short period, the Wagner Group has achieved what Western and UN troops couldn't accomplish in decades. Within less than a year of their deployment, they have made significant changes, which has made the Western world quite envious. As a result, extensive propaganda is being carried out against the Wagner Group, portraying them as a modern form of colonial power. However, it's important to note that the Western media rarely discusses the actions of Western troops in African nations over the years.
The Wagner Group has been successful in areas where it hurts the most, creating discomfort for Western neocolonial countries. But what exactly has the Wagner Group done to win hearts in Africa? Let's take a closer look at their story in the Central African Republic.
The Central African Republic welcomed the Wagner Group for the first time in 2018. Since then, there have been deployments and rotations of fighters from the Russian mercenary group. In July 2023, ahead of a constitutional referendum, dozens of Wagner Group fighters arrived in the Central African Republic. However, concerns arose when hundreds of fighters left the country after a brief mutiny in Russia led by Wagner's founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in June. The government initially claimed that this movement was part of a routine rotation of forces rather than a complete withdrawal.
The Central African Republic has faced significant challenges in achieving stability since gaining independence in 1960. Deeper chaos ensued in 2013 when President François Bozizé was ousted, leading to further conflict among armed groups controlling vast territories. In 2016, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, the current president, sought Russian assistance to combat rebel groups. He actively campaigned for a constitutional referendum that, if approved, could have eliminated the two-term presidential limit, potentially allowing him to run again. This proposal sparked protests from critics and opposition parties who opposed the rule change.
Russia initially deployed security contractors to the Central African Republic in 2018 and later increased support by sending over 1,500 fighters, including instructors and soldiers collaborating with the country's army. Some of these soldiers were part of President Touadéra's security detail and were frequently seen with him.
