A ultra plinian volcano located at the North Korean and Chinese owned Paektu mountain, is a stratovolcano that has caused some of the largest eruptions within the past 2000 years, and the largest eruption in mainland China. It's strength has only ever been only being surpassed in recent history by the super volcanic eruption of Lake Taupo in New Zealand. This Super Volcano lies directly on the border of North Korea and China.

The lesser known side of Mount Paektu is it's violent history, and it's origins to life, which we will cover in this documentary.

Mount Paektu goes by several names, Changbaishan volcano is one, along with Baekdu Mountain among others. This volcanic complex begun it's life a little under 30 million years ago, and it released several large effusive eruptions, that spewed forth lava that created the modern day Gaima Plateau. Mount Paektu sits on an ancient shield volcano that was created during these original effusive eruptions, known as The Tianchi Shield. Mount Paektu would remain largely effusive until it suddenly began to grow increasingly violent at some point around fifty thousand years ago. The chemistry of the magma became altered tremendously, and it's thought that this difference might be due to tectonic uplift that is occurring near Mount Paektu, which is creating an environment that fosters the formation of violent eruptions.
