Rare Soviet and Military Planes Spotted Upon Arrival in North Korea

In this video, I share the incredible experience of landing in North Korea as part of an exclusive tourist group. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a surreal sight—three distinct types of Soviet-era and military aircraft parked on the tarmac. First, there were the imposing Ilyushin Il-76 planes, Soviet-era four-engine heavy transport aircraft recognizable by their high wings, T-tail, and four engines mounted under the wings. These planes are commonly used for cargo and military transport, showcasing North Korea's logistical and military capabilities. Next, I noticed what appeared to be an Antonov An-24 or a similar aircraft, a twin turboprop regional airliner. With high-mounted wings, a straight tail, and twin-engine nacelles under the wings, these planes are widely used in North Korea for short-haul domestic flights, often operated by Air Koryo. Finally, dominating the scene was an Ilyushin Il-62, a Soviet-era long-range narrow-body jetliner. Its distinctive T-tail design, rear-mounted engines (four engines near the tail), and elongated fuselage make it a striking aircraft. The Il-62 is closely associated with North Korea, as it is a staple of Air Koryo’s fleet for international travel. Despite the less-than-perfect weather, the entire experience was unforgettable. The sight of these unique and historic planes, perfectly lined up on the tarmac, felt like a powerful reminder of North Korea’s strength and its ties to Soviet-era aviation. From the moment we landed, it was clear that we were part of something special. Join me as I reflect on this intense arrival, where we were reminded that we were the only tourists in the country at that time. #NorthKorea #Pyongyang #SunanInternationalAirport #MilitaryPlanes #SovietAviation #RareAircraft #AirKoryo #IlyushinIl76 #AntonovAn24 #IlyushinIl62 #AviationEnthusiast #AviationPhotography #Planespotting #Avgeek #Aircraft #AviationDaily #Airplane #Pilot #Flight #AviationLovers #AviationGeeks #AviationWorld #AviationAddict #AviationLife #AviationCommunity #AviationHistory #AviationCulture #AviationArt
