Le Jeu Des Pèlerins D'Emmaüs - Medieval Easter Music - Ensemble Organum, Marcel Pérès

Ensemble: Organum Album: Le Jeu Des Pèlerins D'Emmaüs Video: Le Psautier D'Ingeburge De Danemark, XII secolo http://www.facebook.com/musicamedievale • The Play of the Pilgrims to Emmaus is a typical example of the liturgical drama of the High Middle Ages. The Gospel scenes, although treated in a dramatized manner, fit perfectly into the liturgical context that combines words, action and music. Relating the story of the pilgrims on their way to Emmaus and their meeting with the resurrected Christ, the Officium Peregrinorum was originally composed in Normandy towards the end of the 11th century. The version we have chosen is that of a copy made in Sicily under the reign of the Norman king, Roger II (1130-1154), for the cathedral of Palermo and now in Madrid. The play was normally performed at the end of Vespers for Easter Day. This was a solemn liturgy which was given a supernatural tone by the dramatic performance; medieval man wanted to see, hear and touch the mystical realities which were made concrete by the liturgy. [...] Three of the appearances of Christ that punctuate Eastertide are juxtaposed and in conjunction present an impressive picture. The episode of the pilgrims to Emmaus is linked with those of Mary Magdalene at the sepulchre and of Thomas wanting to touch the feet of the Master. Thus several scenes of the Officium Peregrinorum may be closely associated withe the 12th century Norman mosaics still visible in the cathedral of Monreale in the hills over-looking Palermo. This recording is the result of a dramatic performance by the Ensemble Organum directed by Toni Casalonga in 1990. (Marcel Péres, extract from the booklet). About the video: the cover of this album is a miniature of Ingeburge De Danemark's Psalter representing Jesus and a pilgrim going to Emaus. I decided to use this 12th century manuscript because, besides being beautiful, it is also the perfect background for this work. I wish you happy listening!
