The Mercedes M276 was the successor to the M272. This 3.5L V6 was one of the strongest points for Mercedes Benz, before commiting to turbocharging inline 4’s and V6’s as their mainstream offerings.
The engine uses a 600 V angle, direct injection, and includes variable intake geometry. The engine has been optimized for efficentcy, and compactness, while also building in fewer components (like timing guides, and camshaft bearings). The use of fasteners is excessive compared to others. M276 has its timing components at the front of the engine, unlike Audi’s which have it at the rear. This makes service, if required, not as labor intense.
Its main downside is the plastic cooling components, which often get brittle and break. The engine in this video was from a C350 with just under 200,000km and it seized up due to a lack of lubrication. A previous owner neglected the front timing leak which caused the deterioration of the serpentine belt. The belt wrapped around the harmonic balancer and was sucked in through the front crank seal. While the seal was replaced, the belt material was left in the engine sump to eventually cause oil pump starvation.
