Rome is the capital of the Italian Republic and the most populated municipality of Italy. It is also the capital of the Lazio region and the administrative center of the Metropolitan City of Rome. The municipality of Rome has a special administrative system, called Roma Capitale.
The Foro di Cesare (Forum of Caesar) was the first of the Imperial Forums of Rome to be built, with the aim of expanding the spaces of the political, administrative and religious center of the city from the traditional public square of the Roman Forum and at the same time celebrating the figure who had built it, Julius Caesar.
Piazza del Popolo is a large urban square in Rome. The name in modern Italian literally means "People's Square", but historically it derives from the poplars (populus in Latin, pioppo in Italian) after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name.
The Cordonata Capitolina is the large staircase designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century, which connects Piazza del Campidoglio with the underlying Piazza d’Aracoeli.
The Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II) or Vittoriano is an Italian national monument located in Rome, in Piazza Venezia, on the northern slope of the Campidoglio hill. It is the work of the architect Giuseppe Sacconi. It is located in the center of ancient Rome and connected to modern Rome by roads that radiate from Piazza Venezia.
Terrazza delle Quadrighe (Trrace of the Quadrigas) is the top panoramic terrace of the Vittoriano monument in Rome. It offers stunning views of the city. Since June 2007 it has been possible to go up to the terrace of the quadrigas using a lift.
