Around 1.8 billion years ago the Northern Territory underwent a dramatic transformation as a continent to continent collision occurred which uplifted the land, producing towering mountain ranges. In present day, these mountains are largely eroded, leading the vast deposition of gold and other valuable commodities.

In this video we'll explore the first major gold rush that occurred in the Northern Territory, south east of Darwin. The Pine Creek goldfields were first discovered by pure chance in 1871 during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Workers digging for the project found glimmering traces of gold that led to the first major rush in the region. After easy to find alluvial and surface deposits were depleted, the commencement of hard rock mining began. We'll discuss the geology of how gold and other minerals were deposited from the ancient mountain range that was formed 1.8 billion years ago. Including an additional gold deposit formed during the time this area was under a deep sea.
