An intense heat wave continues to swelter large swaths of the U.S., with temperature records forecast to be broken from coast-to-coast. Excessive heat warnings and advisories are in place from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the southern tip of Florida.

Fifty-four degrees celsius is expected in one of the hottest places on earth, and the heat dome has blanketed much of the southwest. For parts of Texas, including Houston, there is a weather advisory for a high of 44 degrees. And that kind of extreme heat is pounding down on California, Nevada and Arizona.

The national weather service is urging millions of Americans to take the heat seriously and avoid going outside. Globally, scientists have been sounding the alarm, and they now say that barring action, this is the new normal.
