If you think that the great masters and pioneers of early music such as David Munrow, Michael Morrow, Thomas Binkley and René Clemencic were the first to revive the masterpieces of medieval music that have survived over time, you are wrong.
Perhaps the names of Yves Tessier, Chanterelle Lanza del Vasto and Mildred Clary do not sound familiar to you, but these artists already in the early 1950s made astonishing records without any artistic precedent, drawing directly from medieval sources.
In 1941, while Europe was overwhelmed by the horrors of the Second World War, Louis Liébard, an escaped prisoner of war, former chapel master of Dijon cathedral, former director of the choir of La Perdriole, gave life to a choir of young people named " Compagnons de la Chanson" focused on Folk Music. From these environments comes Yves Tessier, a tenor who, together with Mildred Clary, a lutenist born in 1931 in Paris from a family of musicians, in 1953 for the prestigious Erato label, then nascent, will record "Chansons Courtuoises".
This wonderful record is free from any musical influence and from their interpretations of the repertoire of troubadours and trouvères its easy to perceive all the medieval music that in the coming decades will be recorded by the great masters of ancient music, but in my humble opinion the performances of these pioneers remain undefeated.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be bringing you more works from this phenomenal collective of artists.
