John Kay and Steppenwolf: A Rock Legend and a Voice of Protest

John Kay was born on April 12, 1944, in Tilsit, East Prussia. He fled Germany with his mother after World War II, later moving to Canada and then to the United States.
He joined the band The Sparrows, which later became Steppenwolf. The band achieved international success with hits such as Born to Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride and Monster. In 2018, they ended a 50-year touring career.
Despite not being a Canadian citizen, he is an inductee into Canada’s Walk of Fame. In 2017, Steppenwolf was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2018, Born to Be Wild became one of the first songs officially inducted into the Hall of Fame.
John Kay has released numerous studio albums, both as a member of Steppenwolf and as a solo artist. His music combines elements of rock, psychedelia, blues and folk.
* Formation of hard rock: The song Born to Be Wild was one of the first to use the term heavy metal, which influenced the development of the genre.
