8 years ago today, we did our first event - The Storror Chase-Off. It was a 4-team elimination tournament featuring Marrero Gang, who went on to become the 3x WCT Champions, and Storror, who also went on to become Champions (but in a different way). This was the second Evasion of the night between Sasha Powell and Danny Ilebaca. We released this chase on 1st January 2017 and (much to our surprise) it went viral after a few days, getting 1.8m views. We learned a lot from this event and realised that (1) Chase Tag is pretty entertaining to watch!! Young ideas are very fragile and one mediocre event in the early stages could have easily dissuaded us (but thankfully that never happened!). (2) The referee shouldn’t be on the Quad during Chases. It works for most sports but with Chase Tag they get in the way and block the cameras. (3) Most importantly, the Quad needed MUCH more EQ (ie Evasion Quality - the amount of protection the obstacles provide for the Evader). The average chase time and the Evasion ratio at this event were very low so we knew changes to the Quad had to be made and the first thing we did for the next event (WCT2) was add the sloped perimeter. This allowed Evaders to pick up much more speed without having to worry about not changing direction fast enough and running out of the Quad (this doesn’t really affect the Chaser as much because, as long as they make the tag first, there is no need for them to stay in the Quad). As the standard of athlete has improved over the years, we’ve constantly increased the EQ of the obstacles to provide more protection for the Evader.
