At least 20 people have been killed in the town of Pahalgam, in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir region, after gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists.

Most of the dead are believed to be Indian nationals, with two victims reportedly from Nepal and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The south Kashmir area has had a resurgence of tourism thanks to Islamist militant violence dropping in recent years.

An offshoot of a Pakistani jihadist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
