Equation Of Parallel Lines | Graphs | Maths | FuseSchool

In this video, we are going to look at parallel lines. You should already know that straight lines follow the equation y=mx+c and how to find the gradient. On a graph, parallel lines run in the same direction, with the same steepness. They have the same gradient. To find the equation of parallel lines, we still use the y=mx + c equation, and because they have the same gradient, we know straight away that the gradient ‘m’ will be the same. We then just need to find the missing y-intercept ‘c’ value. Take the coordinate from the question substitute the x and y value into the y = mx + c equation (where you already know the gradient 'm' value). You will then be able to rearrange and solve for the missing y-intercept 'c' value. So to find the equation of a parallel line, you simply need to know that the gradient of parallel lines are always equal, and then use the y=mx + c equation.
