A study of microplastics and nanoplastics has found a significant increase in these particles in human brain tissue.
Samples were taken from 91 brains of deceased people, and the analysis showed an increase in microplastic concentrations of about 50% from 2016 to 2024.
Microplastics were found in various human organs, but the concentration in the brain was 10 times higher than in the liver and kidneys.
While the study shows the presence of microplastics in the brain, it is currently unknown how they get there, whether they can be removed, and whether they are harmful to health.
People with dementia have been found to have higher concentrations of microplastics, but this does not mean that they cause dementia.
