The mochi you display is called Kagami mochi (鏡餅/mirror mochi), and consists of 2-3 layers of round mochi cakes stacked on top of each other. The traditional method of making mochi is pounding mochi rice with a giant wooden mallet. However, the days of technology are upon us and now the modern method of making mochi is using a rice cooker! Every year different shrines will still make mochi the traditional way for certain festivals and the New Year, so if you visit Japan look out for it! When I visited Japan, Jun and I went to his uncle's house to eat some freshly-made mochi (出来立て持ち/dekitate mochi). The footage at the end of the video is from the Hadaka Matsuri (裸祭り/Naked Festival) two years ago--which Jun's uncle was involved in planning! 【You can also find us:】 ×Gaming channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/RachelandJunGame ×Extra videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/RachelandJunExtra ×Jun's Kitchen: http://www.youtube.com/user/JunsKitchen ×Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/rachelandjun/profile ×Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RachelAndJun ×Twitter: https://twitter.com/RachelAndJun ×Instagram: http://instagram.com/rachelandjun ×Our blog: http://rachelandjun.blogspot.com/ The songs are Frannie and Bonjour Mon Amie by Josh Woodward and can be found here: http://www.joshwoodward.com/
