A murder case took place in rural Donegal, Ireland in 1898. A young girl found a man, Connell Boyle, lying in a pool of blood and it was later determined that he had been beaten to death. The police investigation into the murder was challenging, but they soon focused on people who knew Connell Boyle personally. They arrested his son Hugh, who was supposedly in Scotland at the time of the murder, on the basis of new evidence. However, the prosecution's case against Hugh was fraught with difficulties and was based on the theory that the murder was motivated by disagreements over land and family matters. Despite the judge's direction, the jury did not choose manslaughter, and Hugh faced the death penalty. However, a petition was sent to the Queen's representative, stating that the fatal blow was struck in the heat of the moment and that Hugh did not intend to murder. The petition succeeded, and Hugh was shown mercy. Meanwhile, his wife Mary was judged harshly by the court of public opinion and eventually left for America, where she awaited her husband's release.
