The Martin D-18E is one of the first acoustic-electric guitars to be released by Martin in 1959. Only 302 of this model were ever made, making it very rare.
The guitar had the characteristic warm and rich sound typical of the Martin D-18, but its uniqueness lay in the fact that it was equipped with electronics for connection to an amplifier.

Kurt Cobain acquired this guitar in 1990. Its sound became an important part of Nirvana's acoustic sound.

Cobain modified the guitar by adding a Bartolini piezo pickup in place of one of the original pickups.
This provided a richer sound for live performances.
Kurt, being left-handed, turned the guitar upside down and retuned the strings, a common practice for many of his instruments.

After Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, this guitar became one of the most iconic symbols of Nirvana and grunge.

In June 2020, the guitar was put up for auction by Julien's Auctions. Its original estimate was $1–2 million, but it sold for $6 million, setting a world record for an acoustic guitar.
The new owner was Peter Friedman, founder of Australian company RODE Microphones, who planned to use it for charitable purposes and exhibitions.
