Arthur Lee: A Troubled Musical Genius

Born in Memphis (1945), Arthur Lee moved to Los Angeles (1952), inspired by his father’s music. He began performing early, mastering the accordion and organ. In 1963, Lee recorded with The LAGs, which foreshadowed his style.
In 1965, Lee formed Love, initially folk rock, which evolved into a diverse sound, quickly gaining popularity in the Los Angeles music scene.
Arthur Lee’s Love was one of the most innovative and criminally underrated groups of the late 60s. Their 1967 orchestral album Forever Changes is often called a psychedelic masterpiece, and rightly so. It blended folk rock, baroque pop, and a kind of eerie, melancholic intensity that no one else was doing at the time.
Arthur Lee was ahead of his time in many ways, both musically and ideologically. He refused to conform to industry norms, and while that was part of what made him a genius, it also meant that Love did not enjoy the same commercial success. Despite critical acclaim, it eventually gained cult status. Internal problems, drug problems, and contractual disputes led to Love's breakup. Lee reformed the group, facing legal battles.
