Thsi is a Motormouth couple car recview of the all-new 2023 Honda HR-V subcompact crossover SUV.T here are some big changes, let’s start with the engine. Out is the 1.8L 4-cylinder, it’s replaced by a larger 2L 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, that’s an extra 17 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque. Honda says, the standard CVT has been reengineered for improved power delivery, refinement and engine sound. The brand claims this new transmission features a more naturally responsive feel thanks to improved G-Design programming and the addition of Honda’s Step Shift programming, which simulates gear changes when accelerating at full throttle. The HR-V comes with both FWD and AWD options. For better traction in snowy conditions, the HR-V’s available Real Time AWD with intelligent control has been re-tuned to send more engine torque to the rear wheels when things get slippery. For the very first time in an SUV, Honda has added Hill Descent Control for more control on steep, slippery declines. The HR-V features 3 drive modes normal, eco and a new snow mode that alters the drive ratios and throttle to maximize available traction and performance in harsher winter conditions. Eco mode reduces throttle and transmission sensitivity as well as air condition output to help preserve fuel efficiency. The new HR-V features a significantly stronger structure and a new independent rear suspension. It is built on Honda’s enhanced global architecture that combines the best of the CR-V platform with the new 11th generation Civic platform. Honda says, the HR-V’s new architecture supports improvements in ride, handling and overall refinement. A new fully independent suspension features MacPherson struts in front and a new multilink arrangement in the rear engineered with low friction components to improve ride quality. The new HR-V has a sportier look compared to the current model and it gets bigger, it is over 9” longer with a low horizontal beltline that begins with the extended hood and continues over the rear fenders. The LED headlights and taillights highlight the wider stance of the HR-V which is almost 3 inches wider than the current model. The grille is flanked by air curtain inlets that route air through the bumper and around the front wheels. In the rear, the windshield wiper is hidden under the hood line for a cleaner look and the sculpted hatch and standard tailgate spoiler give the HR-V sporty proportions. Each HR-V trim features distinct design elements. The LX model is highlighted by a matte-finish on its honeycomb style grille and the lower section of its front and rear bumpers. 17” silver painted wheels are standard. The HR-V Sport gets an even more aggressive horizontal-themed mesh grille with a gloss black rear spoiler and a chrome exhaust finisher. The low portion of the rear bumper is painted gunmetal metallic and it comes equipped with 17” shark gray painted wheels, 18” wheels in the US. For a more upscale look, the top trim features a unique gloss-black version of the honeycomb grille, gloss black exterior accents, 17” painted shark gray wheels with an exclusive machined finish. In Canada the HR-V is available in 8 different colours, 7 in the US including an all new colour exclusive to the HR-V called Nordic Forest Pearl. Honda says the interior of the HR-V is a fresh take on the brands new “simplicity and something” design direction which it introduced in the 2022 Civic. Honda says, the HR-V’s outward visibility has improved creating a more open cabin with a striking metal honeycomb mesh accent that stretches from door to door across the dash and premium materials are used throughout the interior. The HR-V’s centre console is curved and upholstered with French stitching and has a clever pass-through complete with USB charging ports and is ideal storage for small items. Honda offers all new body stabilizing seats, which the brand claims firmly hold the body reducing fatigue and enhancing comfort on long drives. The rear seat is wider to better accommodate three passengers with a rear tray for holding items like a smart phone. The HR-V’s cargo area is bigger than the current model and has a low lift over height making loading large or heavy items easier. The standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks fold easily to a flat floor and the lower door panels and side panels of the cargo area have been designed with a wavy pattern that better hides scratches and scuffs. Honda has updated the technology in the HR-V with a new standard 7” digital instrument cluster, a 7” touchscreen and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top trim comes with the larger 9” touchscreen with navigation and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
The new HR-V features physical knobs for the audio system volume and station tuning buttons along the bottom for switching modes and a simplified menu structure.
