The Cat's Meow

Way back in the 1920's, the word 'cat' was used by flappers to describe someone they thought was cool. This saying became part of the common vernacular around this time, as did the phrase 'The Cat's Meow'. It was first popularized in the comic strip Indoor Sports.

Cats began their unique relationship with humans 10,000 to 12,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, the geographic region where some of the earliest developments in human civilization occurred (encompassing modern day parts of West Asia).

Domesticated cats all come from wildcats called Felis silvestris lybica that originated in the Fertile Crescent in the Near East Neolithic period and in ancient Egypt in the Classical period.

Throughout many Native American tribes, cats have played a significant role in their understanding of the world, which was (and still is) deeply spiritual and sacred. Unfortunately, not all Native American tribes harbored positive feelings for our four-legged friends.
