The southern areas of Australia have been hit with some of the worst flooding in recent history, with many cities becoming inundated by flood waters that rose much higher, and much faster then any other flood that has been experienced since records began. In this two part documentary, we cover the 3 predominant climate drivers in Australia, the SAM, El Nino / La Nina cycle, and the Indian Ocean Dipole. We document the effects that the Tongan volcanic eruption has had on Australia's recently climatic events and it's connected to it in a very indirect way that most people wouldn't even think was possible.

Volcanoes are known to alter the climate of the planet when the largest explosive eruptions occur. They do this by releasing solar reflecting aerosols into the stratosphere, which spread out and form a thin layer that blocks the sun from penetrating the earth, leading to the planet cooling down, sometimes drastically depending on how powerful the volcanic eruption was. But this isn't what happened when the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano in Tonga, erupted on January 15th of 2022. Infact this eruption was completely different to the more common ones that affect the climate by blocking the sun, because this eruption occurred beneath the water. Meaning much of the aerosols such as sulfur dioxide, got trapped beneath the waves.

But one thing that was released in a massive shot towards the stratosphere was water. Lots and lots of ocean water. And this water has some surprising effects in store for Australia's climate. Effecting it in a somewhat indirect way. And the way it does it, is fascinating, and it furthers our knowledge on just how powerful volcanic eruptions are, and how far reaching their impacts can be felt.

The flooding that occurred in Victoria as a result of Australia's La Nina cycle, and the Southern Annual Mode or SAM that's being effected by the Tonga volcanic eruption had some devastating impacts that caused severe hardship for many Australian families, many of whom were already doing it tough. My deepest thoughts and condolences go out to anyone effected by this flooding. And it's my hope that this video will offer some understanding into what happened to perhaps provide some solace into how freakish this event was, or, at the very least, to provide knowledge so that we can be better prepared in the future for an event like this.

Rivers such as the Maribyrnong, which flows through Melbourne's inner suburbs were greatly affected. And many suburban areas were rapidly plunged beneath cold river waters as the Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers swelled immensely.

In the far northern parts of Victoria, the rivers that drained into the Murray also rose tremendously high, cause untold damage to many parts of Victoria that rely on this drainage system. At the actual Murray River, things were just as bad, if not worse, as waters destroyed the homes and livelihoods of tens of thousands of Australians.

The flood watch has been ongoing, even four weeks after the worst of this event occurred. But more wet weather is due to come... And it actually just started raining again as I uploaded this video. Truly a freakish situation, with a volcanic backbone driving much of the strangeness that is going on.
