A day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he would be imposing a new tariff on certain aluminum products from Canada, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland announced Canada would be responding with retaliatory tariffs of its own. Mike Le Couteur looks at why Trump is dragging Canada into another trade dispute.

Even as the two countries are facing another trade war, Canada and the U.S. each posted new job numbers for the month of July. In Canada, 419,000 jobs were added, but as Eric Sorensen explains, new data provided on race gives insight into who was hardest hit in the labour market by COVID-19.

And in the U.S., 1.8 million jobs were added, but the economy remains on a roller coaster ride with spikes in COVID-19 having an impact on economic growth. Jennifer Johnson reports that with unemployment claims still being made, lawmakers are butting heads on a stimulus bill to help Americans out of work.

The death toll from the Beirut explosions continues to grow, with more than 150 now confirmed dead. There is also growing evidence government negligence is to blame, but as Crystal Goomansingh explains, Lebanon's president now claims a foreign missile may have been used.
