Global National: Nov. 22, 2020 | COVID-19 pandemic forces many small businesses to close for good

On this episode of Global National: The holiday shopping season is upon us, but many small businesses will still be struggling to survive, as more COVID-19 pandemic restrictions impact their sales. As Marney Blunt reports, it may be too late for some owners to pivot to online sales in order to save their businesses. Many Canadian business owners are worried about their survival, with some regions going into lockdown amid surging COVID-19 case numbers. This week, Ottawa is rolling out new rules to its emergency rent subsidy program, to help industries endure the second wave. David Akin reports. And even though we are warned against non-essential travel during the pandemic, Hawaii is willing to form a travel bubble with Canada. The plan is to use a pre-travel testing program, allowing Canadians to vacation there without a 14-day quarantine. Mike Le Couteur explains how it works. In the U.S., protesters in several states took to the streets to oppose new government crackdowns on mask wearing and public gatherings. But as Jennifer Johnson reports, officials are desperately trying to keep people home as COVID-19 pushes hospitals and health-care workers to the edge. Plus, ski resorts are experiencing a much busier start to the season, a result of a pent up demand from people looking for more outdoor options during the COVID-19 pandemic. Heather Yourex-West explains the precautions being put on the slopes, in order to cope with the crowds. Also, a small Indigenous-run production company has teamed up with Disney, to shed light on Indigenous youth through a mini-documentary series. Skoden Entertainment CEO Jacob Pratt, who is from a Saskatchewan First Nation, hopes to put a bigger spotlight on Indigenous representation in the entertainment industry. Brady Ratzlaff has the story.
