This is a Motormouth couple car review and fist look at the new 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and VW Atlas Cross Sport. The Atlas family gets a big refresh for 2024, gone is the VR6 and the previous 4-cylinder, they are replaced by a new 2L turbocharged powertrain. It also gets new tech and Volkswagen says, premium materials are used.

The Atlas and Atlas Cross sport will be powered solely by 2L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it has 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The new engine provides similar power to the outgoing VR6, It has only 7 horsepower less, but gets a small bump in torque, an extra 7 lb-ft compared to the outgoing VR6. Towing capacity remains the same at 5,000 pounds. In Canada, AWD is standard. In the US, FWD is standard, AWD is available across the model lineup.

The refreshed Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport maintain the same underpinnings of the outgoing models, so you still get that spacious interior. Volkswagen says, premium materials are used throughout the cabin including a leatherette-trimmed soft touch dash and centre console. The new floating design centre console allows for extra storage. Top models feature quilted leather seats with a diamond pattern and there’s even available ambient lighting in 30 colour choices.

Volkswagen is offering some great standard features including a new 12” touchscreen, a 10.25” Volkswagen digital cockpit pro, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, ventilated front seats and a height adjustable passenger seat. You’ll also find 6 standard USB-C ports, 8 are available with 45-watt fast charging.

There are some nice updates to the exterior with a new front end design and greater differentiation between Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. Both vehicles have a wide chrome four bar grille which is framed by LED headlights and the newly standard adaptive front lighting system. On all but the base trim, the daytime running lights wrap around the headlights and continue
into an illuminated lightbar that sits atop of an illuminated VW logo.

Atlas Cross Sport models feature a gloss black grille and a gloss black X design element stretching across the lower fascia similar to the Taos. At the rear, both models add a larger spoiler and all but the base model has an illuminated lightbar. Atlas Cross Sport models also add a more aggressive rear diffuser than the previous generation. All trims get new wheel designs ranging from 18 to 20”.

IQ.Drive Volkswagen’s driver assist technology is standard for 2024 and there is an available head-up display and predictive adaptive cruise control.
