While a low-budget movie is almost impossible to fail, a big-budget movie can be a disaster for a studio.
Many of the highest grossing movies and franchises have been sci-fi, as have many of the highest grossing ones.
More often than not, a movie doesn't find an audience because it's bad, but sometimes a good movie goes unnoticed for some unknown reason.
There have been many such movies in science fiction that didn't get recognized by audiences, but were actually very worthy.
