In a sci-fi journey across the universe, the starship Avalon is on a 120-year voyage to a distant colony. After a mysterious malfunction, Jim Preston, a mechanic, wakes up 90 years too early from hibernation, leaving him stranded alone in the vast emptiness of space with no way to return to sleep. As loneliness and isolation take their toll, Jim faces a haunting dilemma and makes a fateful decision to wake up Aurora Lane, a beautiful writer still in hibernation, condemning her to share his solitary existence.
