AMLA - How to grow and care Amla tree or Indian Gooseberry plant | Garden Tips in English

Today video is on How to grow and care Amla tree or Indian Gooseberry plant and also show you repotting of this medicinal plant. Phyllanthus emblica, also known as emblic, myrobalan, Indian gooseberry, Malacca tree, or amla TREE derived from Sanskrit word amalaki is a deciduous tree of the family Phyllanthaceae known famous for its edible fruit Amla which is used in various Ayurvedic and Unani Medicines. The fruit is a richest source of Vitamin C and its spherical, light greenish yellow, quite smooth and hard on appearance, with six vertical stripes or furrows. Well! Without going into any other details like the plant morphology or its medicinal benefits, we will quickly look into the care tips and then repot this amla plant brought from a nursery. 1. Soil : Well-drained rich in organic matter is required for growing amla tree. A pH level can be between slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. The waterlogged and clay-rich soil is bad and must be avoided and also avoid too much loose or sandy soil because the plant requires anchoring or support at the same time. 2. Watering: Regular and good watering is essential at the young age and also in summer. Once the tree gets established it doesn’t require regular and frequent watering. In any case, water stagnation must be avoided. 3. Sunlight: The light requirements are similar to any other plant and about 4 to 6 hours sunlight is sufficient for Amla tree. 4. Pruning: For good growth Pruning is necessary. You can plan pruning depending on your requirement, like whether you want a bushy plant or a tall plant and in any case pruning promotes growth. 5. Fertilizer: Use organic nutrients as much as possible because this is an edible fruit producing plant. Decomposed cowdung powder and any other organic fertilizer is best once in 3 months or so. 6. Lastly its prone to Pests like caterpillar and mealy bugs. So keep a watch and eliminate these pests. Now quickly we shall repot this Amla plant we have. You can see the soil used by nursery guys is clay-rich soil and should be avoided in home gardening. They use clayrich soil because they water the plants less frequently. So try to free up the roots as much as you can from this soil. The roots seem to be very well developed here and deeper and here we will use a well draining soil made of garden soil 40%, Cocopeat 20%, 20% perlite and 10 % vermicompost. You can even plant this in a larger pot – atleast 12 inches in dia. Here am planting this in ground and will update you on the growth at our Instagram and facebook page. Also 1 last take home tip, for Repotting any plant is – after repotting when you water the plant to remove air pockets, etc add 1 teaspoon Epsom salt into water to help the plant cope up with the so called Transplant Shock.
