HOW THE SMARTEST PICTURE IN THE WORLD CAME INTO EXISTENCE

(SOLVAY 1927 GS BG) You know what’s going on this is the smartest picture in the world, and at this rate it’s probably going to be the smartest picture forever, that’s Einstein right there and I’m making videos about all these people. But today I wanted to ask the question, why are all these people here? And where is this exactly? (IMAGES OF SOLVAY CONFERENCE GS BG) That’s right today I wanna explain the amazing history of the Solvay Conference. (SOLVAY 1911 GS BG) The first conference was in 1911 and the topic was about why classical physics is incorrect and the quantum theory. This is an invitation only event, kinda like Hogwarts I guess, and only a few people from all over the world were invited, (IMAGES OF MAP POINTING TO LOCATIONS) we have the smartest people from Germany, France, Austria, Denmark, and many other countries. (SOLVAY 1911 GS BG, ZOOM ON EINSTEIN) Btw Einstein is the second youngest person here and I don’t think anyone from outside of Germany even knows who he is. (laughts) so it’s kind of like his debut as well. (IMAGE OF EINSTEIN WITH MARIE CURIE) He also became lifelong friends with Marie Curie here. Which btw my next episode in this series will be about Marie Curie, so make sure to hit that follow button, Marie Curie at this point in time has already won two nobel prizes, one in physics and one is chemistry, no one else has done that to this day. (FACE ZOOM) I just think it’s so cool, they sent out 12 scientific papers to the invitees and told them to come there and discuss different ideas, and it was very effective, (SOLVAY 1911 BG) for example Poincare came back from the conference and he was convinced that quantum theory was correct, Luis De Broigle was introduced to quantum theory for the first time here and he went on to become a rockstar in the field with his “everything is a wave” theory, I’ll make an episode about the rich boy too. (SOLVAY 1913) Then they had the second conference in 1913 and then world war 1 began in 1914. (SOLVAY 1921) So they wouldn’t have another one of these until 1921 but now German scientists are barred from attending it, they were willing to make an exception for Einstein, to which he replied and I quote: (FULL IMAGE WITH QUOTE ABOVE ME AS TEXT) 'it is not right for me to take part in the Solvay Congress because my German colleagues are excluded. In my opinion it is not right to bring politics into scientific matters, nor should individuals be held responsible for the government of the country to which they happen to belong.” (IMAGE OF A YOUNG EINSTEIN) By the way it’s not like Einstein cares about Germany, he renounced his German citizenship at the age of 17 and was extremely against nationalism, but again more on that when I make the Einstein epsiode. (SOLVAY 1927) And then in 1927 after Germany joined the League of Nations, we got German scientists back in the game yayy, and this is where this famous picture comes from. 17 of the 29 people in this picture won a Nobel prize. I call this one the Einstein vs Bohr Conference because they would keep debating the uncertainty principle. And you should know what that is if you have watched my Heisenberg episode. (IMAGE OF 1930) And then we had another one in 1930 (IMAGE OF 1933) and another great one in 1933 where it lasted a week and then of course world war 2 happened so they stopped for a while. These conferences are still going on, the last one was this year, but I just don’t think they’re the same as what they used to be. (IMAGE OF MAP WITH BRUSSELS) The pictures were taken in Brussels in Belgium and that’s because Ernest Solvay is from there. (IMAGE OF ERNEST SOLVAY) Solvay was a Belgian chemist who taught himself science and came up with a better way to make sodium ash which is used in manufacturing glass, softening water and in food as well. He had the patent for it and it made him incredibly rich. (IMAGE OF WALTHER NERNST IN 1911) And then the guy who came up with the 3rd law of thermodynamics, Walther Nernst, told Solvay (IMAGE OF WALTER AND ERNEST SIDE BY SIDE) hey wouldn’t it be cool to invite a bunch of the smartest scientists from all over the world so they can discuss different topics? And Solvay loved to spend his money on the advancement of science so he agreed to sponsor it. (FACE ZOOM FUNNY) This video got kind of long huh? So please make sure to like/share/follow, honestly that’s the only thing that motivates me to make more content.
