The Nackara Volcanic Arc is located to the east of the Flinders ranges. It's buried beneath the relatively recently deposited sediments of the Murray Basin. Beneath the basin, however, lies untapped mineral wealth in the form of gold, copper, rare earth elements, kaolin, and other commodities.
This is an ancient volcanic arc that formed 800 million years ago, and the rifting of the Adelaide Geosyncline also known as the Adelaide Fold Belt, occurred around the time the arc was active. Though there are no outcropping structures, there are several diapirs that were deposited by volcanic activity, hinting to what lies beneath hundreds of meters worth of sediments. Drilling is now underway to uncover the mineral wealth of the arc and preliminary results seem promising to say the least.

This was a truly spectacular and large volcanic arc, and it appears as though sections of it have been torn away from the original arc both by the rifting events the Adelaide superbasin underwent, and by subsequent orogenies, namely the Delamerian orogeny, which occurred in the Cambrian to Ordovician and is responsible for uplifting the once flat sedimentary landscape of the Adelaide rift zone into once spectacular mountains that have been highly eroded throughout time.
