BMW's have a sensor fitted into the brake system which breaks a wire sending a signal to the dash when your brake pads are mostly worn.
Sometimes this also just breaks when the pads are not worn.
This video shows you how to fit a new brake sensor.
So whether you are also replacing the pads or not this will help you out.
