Today I followed my friend David, who is currently a software engineer working at a FANG company in Seattle. FANG stands for Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. He was an intern software developer for five companies before he was able to get into FANG full time. You might've seen similar videos on YouTube from Joma Tech, Tech Lead, or Edward Sa, but I feel like none of them explained it in depth of what they actually do at work. What is software engineering? What is programming?

So the common misconception is that software engineers just sit in a cubicle all day and stare at a text editor. But in reality, that's far from the truth. These top tier tech companies really try to promote a work-life balance. Aside from coding, most of their time is actually spent in meetings or brainstorming sessions. A day in the life of a software engineer actually has more variety than you think! Their work hours are flexible and often can work from home if they really wanted to. On the weekends they don't need to worry about doing overtime so they can enjoy the sunshine with their friends...who are mostly software engineers too. Seattle is definitely a tech-dominated city, so it's hard to find friends who are doing software engineering or working in a big tech company.

Overall, I think software engineers at FANG have a fun, balanced life! They don't need to worry about anything because their starting salaries are extremely high and allow them to live comfortably.
