In 535 AD, a series of massive volcanic eruptions occurred, marking the beginning of a significant climatic event known as the Late Antique Little Ice Age. This period of global cooling lasted for at least two decades, causing widespread environmental and societal disruptions.

Evidence suggests that at least three major eruptions took place, with initial eruptions in 535 and 540 AD. The exact locations are not definitively known, but potential sources include volcanic activity in the Northern Hemisphere and possibly the tropics. The eruptions released large amounts of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, creating an "aerosol veil" that dimmed sunlight. This led to significant temperature drops, crop failures, and famines across the globe.

The volcanic winter contributed to the outbreak of the Justinian Plague, which devastated the population. Societies such as the Maya experienced environmental stress and agricultural challenges. The harsh climate conditions contributed to social and economic turmoil, leading to changes in migration and settlement patterns. Contemporary records from various cultures, including Byzantine historians, Chinese chronicles, and European annals, describe unusual weather patterns, failed harvests, and a dimmed sun.
