Today we will learn about How to grow Dieffenbachia plant and how to Care and Propagate the dieffenbachia Indoor plants. This plant is commonly called as Dumb Cane or the Mother in laws tongue, because if its poisoning properties which makes you dumb to speech.

Dieffenbachia is commonly a ornamental house plants belonging to the family Araceae. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with a straight stem, simple and alternate leaves containing white spots and flecks and this foliage makes it an attractive indoor plant. Its called dumb cane and mother-in-law's tongue because of its poisoning effect which can cause temporary inability to speak – that is it makes you dumb. So Always wear rubber gloves and also use eye protection every time you work with your dieffenbachia plant.

This plant has over 50 different types of species.
Now coming to the Growth factors and Propagation of Dieffenbachias:
The dieffenbachias are zero maintenance plants. They are mainly grown as indoor plants as they can tolerate low light or shady conditions. They need light ofcourse, but filtered sunlight through a window is usually sufficient. They also need moderately moist soil which means they prefer to be watered regularly like alternate days or so in summer and weekly twice in other seasons, and do not over-water these plants. They should also be regularly fertilized like for example we commonly used NPK 20 20 20 fertilizer for all these non-edible types or ornamental plants.
How they grow their Leaves is, they will periodically roll up and fall off to make way for new leaves. Yellowing of the leaves is generally a sign of problematic conditions, such as a nutrient deficiencies in the soil. Dieffenbachia respond well to hot temperatures and dry climates.

Now how to multiply or propagate the dumb cane plants. First method is by using TIP cuttings and plant them in any well drained soil medium and you get get a new plant over a course of time.
Then the second method is Stub cuttings with 1 – 2 inch stem pieces cut and planted horizontally just about half to 1 inch into the soil.
Then the next method is larger cuttings in the usual method. If you have a an old plant with long stem, you can slice this stem into 4 to 6 inch pieces and use these for propagation. Just make sure to keep the right side of stem upwards, as the roots will only grow if you stick the right end of the stem in the rooting medium. You can also use a rooting hormone powder to dip the rooting side with it and then insert them about 1 - 2 inch into the soil.
So, in about 2 – 4 weeks time, you should see many baby dieffenbachia plants with you.
