This video isn't necessarily about CCTV, but setting up an App Password in Gmail is useful for security cameras and systems. In the past, you were able to quickly set up and use Gmail for a variety of third-party devices and software to send automated emails from your Gmail account.

In the late 2010s, Google started to implement several security and spam prevention features that made it harder to enable automatic emailing, such as two-factor authentication and requiring a phone number. While these features certainly helped clean up email spam, they also prevented regular, everyday users from easily setting up email alerts with their security cameras and other notification and alerting software.

In this quick tutorial, we show how to get into the settings for your Gmail account and set up an App Password. An App Password allows your security camera, DVR/NVR, or software to safely access your Gmail account without sharing the actual password for your email account. Keep in mind, however, that enabling an App Password requires you to add your phone number or another 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) method to your Gmail account. Without one of these methods, Gmail won't let you set up security camera email alerts.
